"Designing and building a custom platform is expensive, and margins in the small car segment are lower. So, do we plan to use Renault and Nissan's platforms in this segment? The answer is yes".
These words are those of Vincent Cobee, Product Release Manager at Mitsubishi. This announcement raises rumors about the future platform of the Mitsubishi Mirage.
The next Renault Clio could serve as a reference for the new Mitsubishi Mirage
By taking over the architecture of the next Clio, the Mitsubishi Mirage could thus gain in size. Larger and wider than the Japanese car, it could announce at the same time a gain of comfort for the city car.
The choice of the Clio is not insignificant for Mitsubishi, who will benefit from all the know-how and qualities of Europe's second best-selling city cars in 2017 (327,395 sold, according to data published by the British firm Jato Dynamics).
In addition to the general platform, the new Mitsubishi Mirage could benefit from the TCe 0.9-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. Despite its 3 small cylinders, this engine develops 90 horsepower! This small engine could thus offer a fuel consumption of less than 5L/100 km.
Information confirmed by the Japanese manufacturer, the new Mitsubishi Mirage should be offered also in a 100% rechargeable electric version.
According to rumors, this new Mitsubishi Mirage could see the light of day around 2020. Its release date will also depend on the new Renault Clio which will also be renewed soon.
However, its arrival in Canada in this form has not been confirmed. We should know more in the coming months.
