For Mitsubishi, the arrival of the 2023 Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) marks something of a return to its origins, as the automaker was the first to offer a compact SUV integrating plug-in hybrid technology. This all-new creation, which is highly anticipated in Quebec, may be the recipient of a whole host of different esthetic and technological features, which, according to Mitsubishi, will be offered in a lineup consisting of no fewer than five versions. The least expensive model will have an MSRP of approximately $46,000.
The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will distinguish itself from the Rogue, with which it shares the same chassis and technical components, as Nissan doesn’t anticipate coming out with an electric version of its flagship SUV, at least not in the short term.
The Outlander PHEV boasts its own unique attributes, including the exceptional dependability and fuel-efficiency of its 2.5 L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine (producing 131 hp and 144 lbf·ft). On top of that, there’s the superiority of the continuously variable automatic transmission, which is now less elastic, as well as the ingenuity of the standard all-wheel drive system, which is adjustable by means of a more efficient drive mode selector.
Of course, this engine isn’t alone. It’s accompanied by two electric motors (114 hp/85 kW in the front and 134 hp/100 kW in the rear), powered by a 20 kWh lithium-ion battery with an estimated range of 75 kilometers (charging time: 7.5 hours at 240 volts). Average overall fuel consumption is approximately 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers.
